well, it's rather kernel indipendent, it's a problem of the acpi. A friend
of mine once mentioned to me there would be a patch for the kernel to give
access to a /proc interface file where you can set the keycode of the key 
on which the kernel should wakeup. Strange enough, on apm it's working, but
i'm not going to use apm cause there the ultranav generates lots of cpu load
when moved fast and i have the feeling i have less standby time with apm
instead of acpi. But suspend to ram would be really fancy.

Yes, i've been using swsusp2 for a while, but i got tired of patching all 
my kernel for the next release. Anyway, if nothing else helps, i will switch
back to it.

I'm using ibm-acpi since today, but the problem is not fixed by the ibm-acpi
module or i'm not smart enough to get it running. 

Which acpi patches are you refering to?
