[ltp] activating 3 button on a t40p under debian sarge

It's easy when you know the trick! I've written it down on my thinkpad 
page at www.richardneill.org. Basically, you want Emulate3rd button AND 
EmulateScroll.

Sounds like dodgy hardware? Or possibly you might have some grot lodged 
under the button?
