I'm running Gentoo on a T43 and I've had only two problems, both minor:

#1: I've had to disable DRI on the proprietary ATI X driver
#2: I haven't been able to get the modem to dial out

I haven't ever tried IRDA, but every other device on the system works
prefectly. Suspend-to-disk (using the suspend2 patches) and suspend-to-
RAM work great. CPU throttling is problem-free.

As for the performance profiles (like "Maximum Performance" and "Maximum
Battery"), all those do is just set all your devices to certain
pre-defined settings, like clocking down the processor and dimming the
display. You can set all those things manually, or you can write a
little script (hooked into ACPI events if you desire) to do the same.
