Same problem here, I never got the tpm to be recognized by the kernel. 
This is what dmidecode shows:

Handle 0x0028
        DMI type 10, 6 bytes.
        On Board Device Information
                Type: Other
                Status: Enabled
                Description: IBM Embedded Security hardware
Handle 0x0029
        DMI type 11, 5 bytes.
        OEM Strings
                String 1: IBM ThinkPad Embedded Controller -[1RHT71WW-3.04    ]-


But when I tried to insert the module:

atto:/home/eric[0]# modprobe tpm
FATAL: Error inserting tpm (/lib/modules/2.6.10n/misc/tpm.ko): No such device

dmesg says:

tpm: Atmel TPM version 1.1.0.6
tpm: StartUp failed
tpm: PhysicalPresence failed
