I'm on Gentoo with kernel 2.6.10-gentoo-r7 and devfs. My modem is 
in /dev/tts/LTM0, it looks like this:
crw-rw----  1 mimamau tty 62, 64 Feb 10 22:18 /dev/tts/LTM0
I have installed net-dialup/ltmodem-8.31_alpha10.
