FWIW, I had the same problem -- Debian unstable, ext3, then Ubuntu Hoary,
ext3.

The issue was laptop-mode, which I tried on Debian and now seems to be
default on Hoary.  "cat /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode" will immediately tell
you if that's active (outputs a value != 0 if it is).

as far as I can see it's something to do with both laptop-mode and
madwifi.  Once the madwifi drivers are loaded, this will happen.  I've
managed to repro it on AC too, iirc.   Turning off laptop-mode (and
uninstalling the tool outright!) has fixed the problem for me.
