Well if you want to give it another chance: sound config uses kudzu to detect 
your soundcard, so you might want to start kudzu from terminal and see what 
it spits out:
$ /usr/sbin/kudzu -p --class=AUDIO
That might good start.
Then is module snd-intel8x0 loaded?
