I've heard similar things too, including suggestions to keep the
battery in a cool, safe place when using the laptop on mains.  Only,
power outages are frequent where I live[0], and a PSU here is more
expensive than what a new Li-Ion battery might cost.  Earlier I used
to keep my battery in my laptop backpack whenever I was running the
laptop on mains, but with electricity load-sheddings abound, I quickly
realised that keeping the battery in the laptop all of the time was a
lot more convenient.
