Well, that did the trick!  Cannot believe it :-)  I have sound back on
the TP.  Hurray!!

for the record, this is all I did:

1. Disconnect the cmos battery to undo any damage sarge might have
inflicted on the bios.
2. boot a 2.4.27 kernel
3. disable loading any sound related module at bootup.
4. Use the above module options and load in the OSS cs4232 module.
5. use a mixer program of choice to increase volume.

I am not at all sure why things work all of a sudden, but I am not
complaining :)
