Yep.  BTW this site will be very useful: http://thinkwiki.org/ThinkWiki .
In particular http://thinkwiki.org/PreDesktop_Area is relevant -- look out
for the BEER and PARTIES ;)

The easiest thing to do is just to install away, by default the predesktop
area is hidden.  But if you're worried, or want an extra few GB, call IBM
support and claim that you've overwritten it somehow, and they'll ship out
a set of CDs that perform the same task...
