you can build the Xorg server objects objects as either standard unix
shared libraries (drv.so, dlloader), or xfree86 "elf" objects (drv.o,
elfloader).  xfree86 and xorg used the "elf" loader (donated my
metrolink) since it allowed elf objects to be loaded on any OS on a
partiucular platform (eg, same driver would run on linux, bsd, etc.).=20
It has it's own set of limitations however and is going away in favor
of regular shored objects.  You can actually convert between elf and
dlloader formats using ld, IIRC.  check google.
