I hope I haven't missed something further up the thread and am 
introducing something irrelevant but I have just installed Slackware 
10.2 on an R51 (type1836-XXU) and put lilo in the MBR without any issues 
at all.  I can mount and read the XP and the recovery partitions without 
any hiccups from SLack, and the machine will boot to both XP or the IBM 
partition without a problem.
My 2 cents.
