You say you don't move your Thinkpad around - does it sit in the sun?  UV 
radiation in sunlight deteriorates plastic, and heat damages electronics.  
Heat also damages plastic.

I carry my T42 to work each day and home in a Targus padded backpack.  No 
problems with it or the T21 I got in 2001.  I don't use a lot of PCMCIA 
cards, so I'm not moving those in and out a lot.
