In the last few years, I've had 3 machines fail inexplicably and in the 
weirdest ways. Every one of them turned out to be caused by bad RAM. 
Note that memtest really does need to run overnight, ideally 24 hours 
before you have a clean bill of health. Usually, errors pop up much 
sooner than that, but by no means always.

You can run memtest from knoppix.
