[ltp] Thinkpad DVD problem

I've just run into a strange problem with two 08K9647 DVD drives
which I just purchased.
They both read factory DVDs and burned CDs OK but won't even
start to recognize burned DVDs.
I've had many DVD drives go through my hands and have never run into
this before.
I've tried this with both data DVDs and backup movie DVDs from different
burners and different media that are fine in other drives.
Any ideas?
