"gnokii --identify" still doesn't work for me. However, looking at
gnokii-0.6.12/gnokii-ir-howto I now see a statement that gnokii won't
work with FIR, and moreover the following statement (which is pretty
nonsensical given that gnokii uses /dev/ircomm0):
"You can not use gnokii over infrared and linux-irda at the same time.
 If you want use gnokiis ir-communication you must put linux-irda
off."

The only firm conclusion I can draw is that gnokii is too weird to
give any definite information on the driver, and you should fine
someone with a different, saner IR device.

Anyway, SIR+minicom (yay!) work and FIR+minicom don't work. This may
be the fault of the phone. The bad news is that I'm still getting
weird crashs after loading the patched nsc-ircc.
