Make sure the Mesa libraries and DRI drivers are installed and dri is
enabled in xorg.conf.  The DRI modules are in the libgl1-mesa-dri
package.  I use a Debian 2.6.16 kernel which supplies the needed DRM 
module.  With udev, etc. "it just works".  The mesa-util package contains 
the glxinfo utility which will tell you if DRI is enabled.
