The alternate procedure IBM suggests for the T43-class machines is close to
that one too:

1. Unplug machine, remove battery
2. Press the power button for two seconds, repeat it ten times
3. Press the power button for the eleventh time, but hold it down for ten
   to twenty seconds.

This will reset everything which is not an eeprom or flash.  It appears to
be a recommended procedure everytime your ThinkPad acts weird on cold power
up.
