I gather from the rest of your post that you're using the binary ATI
drivers, right?

You mean a vanilla kernel?  I should also apply the suspend2
patchset, right?

I'm using gentoo's package "suspend2-sources", which is the vanilla
kernel + gentoo's patches + the software suspend2 patches.
