I ordered a 9 cell battery for my a22m 2628-S1U a few weeks ago and it
just came yesterday... after leaving it to charge overnight for 12 hours
it has ZERO charge in it. The multimeter says 0V, the laptop dies with
this battery as soon as I unplug it from the wall and there seems to be
no way of charging it.

This would lead me to believe that the battery is either broken or not
compatible with my system. FRU P/N is 02K6619 and ASM P/N is 02K6617.
These numbers were not displayed on the site when I bought it so I just
found this out now. According to
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/23p0896.pdf, this
battery is the 02K6619 and is only available for 2629 models not 2628...
does that mean the battery WILL NOT WORK with a22mm 2628 or that you'll
never see an a22m 2628 come with this battery?

Many websites claim it will work including this one
http://www.ebuybatteries.com/product/laptop_batteries/IBM/3_IBM-A-02K6640_IBM+02K6619.htm
it actually lists a22m 2628-S1U in the list of compatible models and the
battery has the same FRU number as mine but looks a little different in
the picture. Also that site says it's cells are Panasonic but the
manual says the battery is made by Sanyo and that a different 9 cell
battery (also only for 2629) is by Panasonic.

Do you know how liable websites are for that kind of information? I'd
like to think that this battery is defective and that the one on the
other website is either a slightly different kind or one that is not
broken but I am skeptical now.

Should I go back to using 6 cell batteries any only trust the ones in
the manual stated to be available for 2628-S1U?
