Only in windows is the screen resolution hard-coded at 96dpi. Linux 
allows you to change it, such that eg an 8pt font is always the same 
number of mm high, whether it's displayed on a 133dpi screen, a 96 dpi 
screen, or a physical printout.

The higher the resolution, the better. There's no downside whatsoever, 
in Linux. You want something like this in xorg.conf  (mine is for 15" 
1600x1200):

Section "Monitor"
         DisplaySize 304 228     # Sort out tiny fonts - these are width,
				# height in mm.
EndSection


Then, configure KDE/Gnome etc to have font sizes around 8-10pt. You can 
turn off antialiasing too - it's totally unnecessary at high dpi.

Also, enjoy much better viewing of digital photos. For games, xrandr is 
useful to temporarily drop the resolution.
