Do you have a port replicator or dock?  If so, check if you have the problem
with the ethernet port in the replicator/dock.  That might help pinpointing
the issue.

An easy way out is to get an ethernet PCCARD and use that.  It is much
cheaper than replacing or fixing the planar card (motherboard).

What you describe sounds like either cold/bad solder problems, or a hairline
crack in the planar card, or RJ45 receptacle.  They can be fixed, but
hairline cracks are hideously difficult to pinpoint.  The RJ45 receptacle
can be replaced, and bad soldering can be fixed in the entire board by
reflowing it (requires professional help).
