[ltp] Blank VGA even when LCD was on

This happened to me recently on a public video presentation.

I've had my laptop connected to a projector, the screen cloned
using xrandr to the VGA port. After some 15 minutes in the video,
the projector went black - it wasn't off and it seems it still
received SOME signal from the VGA port, otherwise it would display
a blue color screen. I tried xrandr --output VGA --off in which case
the projector would turn it's blue color screen, and then set the
mode again but nothing changed. The projector was just black.
At the same time the LCD was completely ok and showing the video.

Even reseting the X server didn't help, nor did powering off and on the
projector. At the end I had to reboot, and then it worked again.

No, I'd like to know what caused this. Did some power save timer kicked
in but only on the VGA port?

I have a X60s with intel 945gm graphics controller, kernel is 2.6.24
with thinkpad_acpi 0.19 and tp_smapi 0.36, X.Org X Server 1.4.0.90
and xf86-video-intel 2.2.0.

Any hints? Similar experiences?

ps.
yes it was embarassing
