Check out model details here: http://www.lenovo.com/support
Enter the model number and you get this:

Product: ThinkPad T43 1871-Y81 [change]
Operating system: All [change]

Original description: Based on 1871-CTO: P M 740(1.73GHz), 768MB RAM, 40GB
5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel 900, CDRW/DVD, 802.11abg wireless,
Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

So it seems it shipped with an ABG WiFi card.

The best way to check is to open it up and see if it's there. Also, check
your BIOS settings. It may be disabled.

Once you enter the model number at Lenovo's site, click on User Guides and
Manuals, then Hardware Maintenance Manual. It has instructions for
replacing every component.

It's very easy to install a MiniPCI WiFi card, but only those certified by
IBM/Lenovo will work. Others will generate an 1802 error. (There are
workarounds for that too.)
