All, the system is a T41 running fc9. After much fumbling, mostly random 
walk, sound and video are all working. The only exception is the on 
board mic. It is feeding output directly to the speakers and cannot be 
captured by other applications, record, skype, etc. The config is using 
standard fc9 including pulse.

Does anyone know of a sound stack debug tool?
Does anyone know how or where in the stack mic config is connected to 
the speakers.
