Thanks for the suggestion. I installed the
linux-backports-hardy-generic, which automatically selected the other
for installation. However, the light did not come on. I restarted the
network also, but it still did not come on.

However, I don't understand how it works when there are two different
network devices. I am currently at home where I have cable. I connect
via ethernet to the router and then the cable modem. If I am connected
by the ethernet, does that somehow block the wireless from working?
Would that be a reason why the light does not come on?

Also, I know my neighbors all have wireless networks - about six of
them are visible when I insert the Netgear WG511T wireless card. (In
that case Network Manager shows two wireless devices.) But when I use
only the built in 4965agn no wireless networks appear. On the other
hand, when I was at the university earlier today no wireless networks
appeared either, even though I connected to one. And the one I
connected to was the correct one for students to use. I don't even know
how it knew to connect to that one because I know there are dozens of
networks visible at the university.

I am at a disadvantage for testing this because I have no wireless
networks to connect to at home. I have to wait until I am at the
university. Therefore I can do something like installing the above
modules, but I can't tell if it actually did anything.
