As others have noted, video playback works fine if I turn compiz off. 
Alex has posted an xorg.conf change that should fix - I will try and 
report back.
The other thing that appears broken is the microphone - so I can't use 
skype. I'll play around with sound settings before I give up on this; I 
seem to recall having fun and games with gutsy as well.
