As explained, the SD slot is not connected via USB and requires its
own driver.  If we kick&scream enough, at some point BIOS drivers will
be added so that you can also boot from such media, which would indeed
be good.  In the mean time I boot from USB flash keys instead, but yes,
they do stick out, which sucks.
