[ltp] Help with audio recording

Hi folks,

Apologies if this is the wrong forum for this.

I'd like to audio record a long meeting (all day) using my laptop. I
will use one microphone and it will be just voice quality recording. I
need a simple to use audio recording program with automatic gain
control so that voices far away from the microphone can still be picked
up, and store in a compressed format such as mp3.

What do you suggest I use? I looked at basic tools such as arecord and
sox, but I am sure there is someting better out there.  Should I try
Audacity? Seems like an overkill.

Suggestions welcome.
