I've recently switched to 64-bit (Ubuntu 9.04) on my desktop. No
noticeable performance improvements, no incompatibility issues, but
memory usage is noticeably higher. The same set of applications that
used to fit into 1 GB of RAM on the old 32-bit system now uses 1.2=E2=80=93=
1.5
GB of memory. (Anyway, with 4 GB total... who cares. It's mostly used
for disk cache.)
Every piece of free software I am using works fine on 64-bit system.
Limited amount of proprietary software works too: Adobe Flash, Skype
(with 32-bit compatibility environment, but properly packaged *amd64.deb
is available), NVIDIA graphics drivers, VirtualBox.
I don't think it is worth it for most users, but it doesn't hurt too. As
a software developer I can see extra coolness in 64-bit environment.

Adobe Flash 10 alpha for 64-bit Linux works just fine for me. I've
experienced no trouble with it so far.

Huh?

I just don't get how it differs from 32-bit.
