[ltp] playback of fhd video on linux

Hi all,
does anybody have any experiences of playing 1080p video on linux? From
what I have heard there have been problems in the past because of
lacking hardware acceleration support etc. So do I for example need to
choose a thinkpad with nvidia graphics (becaues of vdpau) or will an
intel/ati be good enough? I was thinking of getting a T400s with
Core 2 Duo 2,4 GHz (SP9400) and Intel 4500 MHD	graphics but not being
able to play hd video would be a deal breaker for me.
