no, I did not. However, in the meanwhile I discovered, that I did not 
include CONFIG_CFG80211_WEXT in my .config before compiling new kernel. 

I was mislead by the help, which says: 

"Enable this option if you need old userspace for wireless extensions 
with cfg80211-based drivers."

I thought iwlwifi or iwl3945 is new enough.

After enabling this option, my wifi seems to work. 
That is, I can do scanning for AP. 
The led still does not work, but it is just a small trouble, not worth 
much effort for me.
