The ThinkPad Edge models have a 1366x768 display, compared to the R31 @
1024x769. The Edge comes in both 14" and 15.6" diagonal measurement.
My R31 is 14". The display height is 8.4". With a 15.6" 16:9 display,
the height is about 7.6" or 90% of the 4:3 display height. If height is
that critical, you can go with 17" displays. Also, the number of pixels
is determined by the display configuration and not linear dimensions.
For example both my R31 and new 16:9 ThinkPads have 768 lines, but the
16:9 models have 342 more pixels per line. However, I'll soon have an
opportunity to work with a 16:9 15.6" display, as a friend recently
bought a new Gateway computer and she'll be wanting me to set it up for
her. As for 16:9 vs 4:3 displays, I prefer 16:9. In the fall of 2009,
I bought a 23" 16:9 1080p monitor to replace a 15" 4:3 1024x768 monitor
and find the extra width is a great improvement.
