Hi!

Ok, so my first experiences with the ThinkPad T520 and Intel SSD 320:

I really like that 15.4 inch FHD display with 1920x1080 pixels. Its very=20
bright and colorful! And crystal clear, I think due to the high dpi. Its=20
143x143 according to the displaysize I measured.

root@merkaba:/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d# cat display.conf=20
Section "Device"
        Identifier "Grafikkern"

        # Monitore
        Option "Monitor-LVDS1" "Notebook-Display"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Notebook-Display"

        DisplaySize 340 192
EndSection

Great display. Intel HD 3000 graphics works out of the box with Debian=20
unstable, I have some X.org packages from experimental, but I think they=20
are not required, the intel driver is from sid.

I am currently using 2.6.39-rc7 which feels a bit snappier, but I am not=20
sure about it. After some hibernation cycles I had some i915 hang messages=
=20
with 2.6.38 where the gfx performance with KDE kwin compositing crawled.

root@merkaba:/var/log# zgrep hangcheck syslog*
syslog.1:May 20 18:06:57 merkaba kernel: [ 5214.465646]=20
[drm:i915_hangcheck_ring_idle] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... blt ring=
=20

[...]
[drm:i915_hangcheck_ring_idle] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... blt ring=
=20
idle [waiting on 947907, at 947907], missed IRQ?
root@merkaba:/var/log#=20

Didn=B4t see these with 2.6.39-rc7 so far *knock wood*.

Otherwise than that Sandybridge gfx works without any visible glitches.=20
Compositing is at 50-60 fps in KWin, except for desktop cube where it is=20
at about 25-30 according to KWin itself. Well its full hd.

The Intel SSD 320 is just *awesome*. I have seen peek values of about=20
270000 block out in vmstat 1 while rsync=B4ing the data from my backup driv=
e=20
via eSATA to it. Starting LibreOffice, Amarok, Digikam, KMail is quite=20
snappy. Digikam takes some time but it is way faster initialized than on=20
my ThinkPad T42 with wd 320 GB IDE harddisk.

Sound is working out of the box as well, also with PulseAudio. The=20
speakers sound crystal clear and quite good IMHO.

Hibernation is working out of the box and seems to use userspace software=20
suspend by default on Debian. I think its done via pm-utils. Suspend seems=
=20
to work too.

Battery time seems to be okay:

Until here its with display at full brightness. Now I reduce to about 2/5=20
of the slider in the applet in KDE:

Sa 21. Mai 10:18:07 CEST 2011

Seems the battery will not be charging up to its maximum capacity?

ThinkPad SMAPI did not work. It said something along:

no embedded controller found

I can=B4 t compile it for 2.6.39-rc7 debian kernel package as there are no=
=20
headers available for it. But I see there are 2.6.39 packages available=20
now, so I will try again with that.

ThinkPad keys work:
=2D Fn-Pos1, Fn-End: brightness
=2D Fn-Page up: thinklight
=2D Fn-F4: suspend

ThinkPad keys that do nothing:
=2D Fn-F12: hibernate
=2D Fn-F2: lock symbol, whats this one meant for?
=2D Fn-F3: battery plus symbol, whats this one meant for?
=2D Fn-F6: webcam, ditto?
=2D Fn-F7: externel screen
=2D Fn-F8: whats this?

Bluetooth switch works. I didn=B4 t look into WLAN yet, other than to=20
install iwlwifi firmware package.

What I dislike:
=2D no eSATA port on the Intel graphics only model
  - the eSATA port on the Minidock plus works ;)
  - there are eSATA / USB 3 Express Cards available
    - unfortunately the ThinkPad does seem to take only one express card
    - I ordered a Delock flat one with one eSATA port that I could leave=20
permanently installed cause it disappears into the slot completely.

=2D no USB 3 port

=2D no bluray burner, thats that minor. I didn=B4 t use it yet anyway and=20
there are cheap external burners

The Fujitsu S751 for example is available with all of this, but then not=20
with Full HD display and a keyboard that is as good at this one. I do not=20
understand why I have to buy a NVidia Optimus to get the eSATA port. Or a=20
ThinkPad W workstation model for USB 3. Well for however who will wait a=20
bit longer, the next intel chipset for Ivybridge will finally support USB 3=
=20
and then Lenovo should not have any excuse for no USB 3 port anymore. But=20
then they have no excuse for no eSATA as well.

I close with some system data:
