Just to make sure: You did try to configure it using xinput, right?
e.g.

$ xinput list
  Virtual core pointer
      ...
      TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint

$ xinput list-props 'TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint'
  [lots of interesting stuff to tweak]
