Paul,

Have you checked that the serial port works under W98 (i.e. with hyperterm or
somesuch)?  With my 770X I had to use the PS2 DOS program even though the
graphical configuration utility said the serial port was enabled.  The PS2
program interface is not exactly intuitive but if I remember (I don't have W98
installed right now) there are two serial port options (PS2 sera and PS2
serial or something like that) one of which you can use to enable.  I seem to
remember also having to turn the IR port off, either an interrupt conflict or
not enough interrupts available to use both at the same time.  I've not yet
looked at using IR under Linux.
