You're a lifesaver! I was about to slit my wrists, believing I had
tried everything, but yes, enabling the "sera" option in the PS2 utility
rather than the "serial" option was the answer.  And as far as I could
see there is no way to do that from within the Win98 GUI! 

As bizarre as I find this, I won't look a gift serial port in the mouth.
If/when all this comes together I'll try to throw together a page for the
770Z specifically.
