[ltp] pcmcia question

I have a 3com 3ccfem556b ethernet/modem card.  It is on the supported
list for pcmcia as shipped with RH 6.1.

When I put in the card, I get a high beep and then a low beep,
indicating some sort of failure.  I looked at /sbin/lsmod and the
correct driver (3c574_cs) is being picked up.  But, when I look at
messages in /var/log I see that cardmgr (start cmd in particular)
exits with status 1 (error??)  after "./network start eth0" and "+
usage: ifup <device name>."

Machine is a thinkpad i1480.

Any ideas on how to fix this?
