[ltp] pcmcia question

This is a followup to my original post. FYI for those interested...

It turns out that the floppy drive on my i1481 is defective (argh! and
I have only had the machine for five days!) IBM had me bring the unit
to a repair place, and while there I borrowed one of their pcmcia
modems - it is a US Robotics/Megahertz XJ4288.

I inserted the XJ4288 in the pcmcia slot and heard two high-pitched
beeps. According to lsmod the modem was in ttyS1, so I ran modemtool
and minicom initialized and appeared to work fine. There were no
errors in /var/log/messages, unlike the situation described below.
This makes me suspect that the problem I am having is the 3ccfem556b
as opposed to pcmcia on my machine in general.

Any comments would be appreciated...

Michael
