I have a SlimSCSI APA-1460A and it work without a
hitch, even got SANE working with my EPSON on it.

Do you have a resource conflict like an interrupt problem ?
Do you have another card installed at the same time ? (although
that really shouldn't matter).
What does "/sbin/cardctl ident" say about the inserted cards ?
