setting mode on XFree thinkpad

have installed redhat 5.2 on thinkpad 1412.....linux comes up 
when i startx     it presists in coming up only in the 640x480 mode
does anyone have a configuration that permits it to comeup in
800x600  on this particular thinkpad...it uses
a Neomagic Magic Media 256AV....the lcd is limited to 800x600
