  The ATI utah-glx code is very unstable right now from my experience.  I get
lockups and crashes like there's no tomorrow.  it's no-where near production
quality yet (unlike the G400 driver which is pretty nice :)). Even when it's
done you won't get top notch performance like you do on the Matrox and NVidia
cards, although it should still be usable.

I don't remember if I have tested the patched X server in 640x480 mode yet. 
I tried 1024x768 and I *THINK* 800x600 too.  CTRL-ALT-+ and CTRL-ALT-- let
you switch modes on the fly if you have them defined in the XF86Config file.
