Hi- I'm a newbie to Linux. Which in your opinion is the most solid
distribution for ThinkPad 600E's? (With support for devices,
ease-of-installation, etc.)

Personally, I swear by Caldera eDesktop 2.4 in general. For me, it strikes
the sweet spot between ease-of-install-and-use, and having the power user
tools that I want to get things done. I have it running on various machines
round here, including my TP600E. However, I found that its PCMCIA support
did not work out of the box - in the end, I downloaded the pcmcia-cs
tarball and rebuilt it from scratch (which didn't take long). Now it works
beautifully, and handles card inserts, sleep mode, etc. much better than
NT.
The only other problem is the sound chip, which requires that you load the
cs4232 module quite late in the startup scripts. I wrote a little
start/stop script in /etc/rc.d/init.d for that. I'm not using the IrDA
port, but everything else works smoothly.
eDesktop 2.4 is getting a little old now, so when I get time, I'm going to
try Caldera's new 3.1 workstation product (code-named Sybil).
