I had absolutely NO problems getting X to work on 760C in 800x600
256-color 8-bit mode.
It was Xfree 3.3.6 (earilier or later version can be different matter -
support for lot of old chips is dropped from 4.x. But you still could use
X libraries from 4.x. Just get XF86_SVGA from 3.3.6 )
I've copied XF86Config file from some other machine (I hate XF86Setup
program, and prefer to edit XF86Config by hand) and commented out all the
modelines except generic VESA 800x600.
