You can fix the KDE grabbing /dev/dsp problem. If you go to KDE's control
centerand go to the audio/sound server config tab you can tell the aRts sound
daemon to suspend (check the "autosuspend if idle for..." checkbox and put in
whatever value you want. Then if you want to use a non-aRts aware sound
application you just have to close down whatever else is using sound and wait
for the idle duration to expire (which you can also set).
The artsdsp command line program can also be used to redirect non-aRts aware
programs so they work with aRts, in which case the program should run in
concert with other audio programs. Its not a perfect system, but lacking the
kind of full featured multi-media layer that windows has it is the best you
can get in a Linux environment.
I must admit, audio on Linux is not up to snuff. I routinely have problems
where programs sporadically fail to open the audio device, or the device
becomes permanently blocked when some program crashes and then only a reboot
will fix it. I'm really hoping that integrating ALSA into the kernel is going
to spell some improvement in the situation!
