I also had a similar experience on my T30. The nice thing is the
orinoco_pci driver finally works out of the box for the built-in wireless
card, although it does have to be reset periodically.
Also, there's some code for speedstep built in to the kernel in RHL 8.0.
That's very neat. It worked on one system we tested that had a P3. On my
T30, however, I had to patch it and rebuild the kernel to get it to work
right.
If you want the latest and greatest speedstep you can get it from here:
http://www.brodo.de/cpufreq/
Or just the basic patch is here:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=74589
There's also some other speedstep code on freshmeat, although it's not in
the kernel.
The latest cpufreq code works on the T30, and it updates /proc/cpuinfo,
although you still have to tell it manually when to change.
At any rate, I thought that was cool.

For what it's worth, I downloaded the ISOs Monday night and did an update
over my existing Redhat 7.3 (Thinkpad 600x with maxed out RAM) dualboot
with Windows ME).
I like 8.0 enough so far that I went back and did a full install of
everything, removing my Windows ME partition in the process.
OpenOffice with the new font stuff looks _great_. Much better than under
7.3.
The only thing I found so far that I don't like is that it took me a couple
tries to find the darn System Terminal. :)
Now I'm off to do some playing with the Apache 2.0.
