Ted, many thanks for the tip. Seems to work much better now - will 
test further but so far, so good. I am using Mandrake 9.1 BTW.

My T21 never got the sound (the kde mixer) to work with 9.1, so I
continued using 9.0. 
 
 
I'll do a follow up on the T23 that I pick up tomorrow, to see if the
same tricks work/are needed.
