Ted
The sound and NIC work were detected and installed automatically for
me with mdk.9.1 on the T23. Haven't tried to install drivers for
the linmodem as I have a pcmcia card modem (dacom gold plus) that
works perfectly. Haven't tried infra-red. My digital camera and usb
memory stick are recognised and an icon appears on the desktop and
a right-click gives mount/unmount options. Hibernate seems to work
fine following your tip about switching to a text console - no need
to remove the pcmcia modem or do anything to sound.
The only 'gotcha' is that there is a newer version of XFree86 in 9.1
than in 9.0 (4.3.0 IIRC) and it does not support the Savage
graphics card. Good news is that there is a driver and instructions
available here:
http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html
The instructions explain exactly how to install the driver from
scratch in any distro but I found that once the driver was in the
correct directory, mandrake did the rest.
The way that I did it may not be the best as it was trial and error
as I am a novice at all this. I first installed mandrake9.1 and
tried to configure the video display - that let me choose the
screen and resolution (generic laptop at 1024x768). I chose not to
automatically start x-windows. Then after completing the install
and rebooting, I logged into a text terminal as root and copied the
driver into the correct directory - info on the driver website. I
think I had to create the directory. (I had previously d/loaded and
untarred the latest version (1.1.27t) of the driver and kept it
somewhere accessible).
Finally I did an upgrade install which allowed me to configure
X-windows and simply accepted the default driver chosen by the
installer - it worked, I had X-windows on my T23!
You probably don't need this much detail but it may help someone
else. It certainly had me stuck for a couple of days.
Regards
Syd
P.S - Ted, any chance you could turn off html in your emailer and
send them as plain text messages? Thanks.
