Marc,
besides Fedora Core 1, previously I have also tried to install SuSE 8.2 (with ACPI enabled) on R40e. I did this, since I read somewhere that one had already successful experience with SuSE 8.2 on this macheine. I got similar result as what you had, i.e.
1. acpi seems to work, like I can see the status of the battery (but manually I have to do "insmod battery" and "insmod ac" to get this results). If you try to "insmod processor" or "insmod thermal", it certainly got stuck! The other good news is that the notebook switched off by itself when it halts. The bad news: I experienced that sometime my laptop could not boot up properly in the sense when I switched on my machine, the screen just got blank, if you tried once more, it might be started properly. Since I did not like such "bad news", I returned back to fedora Core 1.
2. tg3 driver for the network card did not work as you said, I have to use the driver from Broadcom, then it works properly.
3. Installing Fedora Core 1 on R40e is also not without problems. I read from many sources as well, that some problems occur when installing Fedora or RedHat on R40e, e.g.
- the keyboard hangs when you were asked whether you want to check the installation media (CD) or want to skip it. This I could handled by passing the options "linux nousb" on boot. It works, but afterwards, the GUI installations did not work. This could be handled either by using text-based installations or passing the argument "resolution=1024x768" on boot (if we insist to use GUI installation).
4. As VGA driver automatically it used VESA generic. But, later I chose to use ATI Radeon (generic).
Cheers,
Ari

Hi !
I had a lot of trouble with acpi and my R40e. My R40e
is now running with kernel2.6-test9 (i'm waiting for the 2.6 debian-package).
I compiled the kernel with building all acpistuff as modules, if I now
load that modules, without loading processor.ko and thermal.ko, acpi
works :-)
That means i can see the status of my battery, adn the notebook switches
of after shutdown - but no suspend-to-ram, or suspend-to-disk.
I had/have also a lot of other problems:
- the tg3-driver of kernel2.6 is lodable, but does not work
i have to use a proprietary broadcom-driver
- the debian-thinkpad-patch for the tpctl-tools does still not work
- my xserver does not support opengl on my card
output of lspci:
--
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon IGP 340M
--
someone said that it is possible fake the pci-id of this card to
older, but compatible card.
I'm currently writing a debian-related install-howto for this notebook,
maybe someone can give some useful hints - to solve that problems.
Best regards
Marc Schoechlin
