You shouldn't even have to have a sound card driver installed to play the
CD. Do you get any sound from (for example) xmms?

If not, you'll probably need to do a few things:

1) In easy setup, disable quick boot.
2) When you run sndconfig, try some different IRQ/DMA settings. io=0x530
irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=5 seem to work here.
3) Don't reboot from Windows and expect it to work. Turn off the machine
before booting into Linux. :)

An oddity - if your soundcard is *not* working, you'll be able to hear the
modem dial out. If your soundcard *is* working, you won't be able to hear
the modem. Weird, but verifiable on two 600-series machines and two
77o-series machines.

By the way, since you have Redhat 8.0, go to http://freshrpms.net and
install apt for RPM. Then you can install/update your software
(in particular, the media players will need updating to play mp3s)
painlessly.
